Our review of Smallicombe, Devon

ACCOMMODATION AND PRICES

This award winning, hidden gem is tucked away in the rolling hills of East Devon. Set in a rural location close to the road network, Smallicombe makes an ideal base for exploring the West Country.

This farmstead offers a range of four-star self-catering accommodation options, all of which are well appointed and tastefully decorated. Cider Barrel is a two-storey holiday cottage sleeping six, with large open plan living area downstairs and three bedrooms upstairs, plus large patio-style doors onto the garden with excellent views.  Granary, part of the original barn, is a two-bed single storey cottage sleeping three, with plenty of accessible level space perfect for young families.  Inglenook, meanwhile, is a homely and comfortable characterful cottage sleeping four with ancient bread oven and inglenook fireplace; there’s a main bedroom offering either a spacious superking or twin, plus an additional sofa bed in the living room.  A fourth cottage, Hay Loft, also offers tempting and contemporary holiday accommodation but with only one bedroom sleeps a maximum of two; maybe one for the grandparents to escape to!

Prices at Smallicombe are competitive for this part of the world; a family of four staying in Inglenook during peak summer season (July) can expect to pay around £895/week, while larger Cider Barrel is around £1795 at the same time of year.  Prices, of course, are much cheaper at off peak times or for long weekends.

CHILD FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

Smallicombe is a thriving working farm, specialising in rare breed livestock. As well as the acres of outstanding scenery to explore there are wonderful opportunities for the children to interact with the animals, including collecting eggs, feeding the pigs, mixing meal for the nursing sows and cuddling the rabbits.  Longer ‘farm experience’ mornings can also be arranged for super-keen visitors!

Children staying at Smallicombe will also enjoy making use of the large on-site play area with basket swing, slide, climbing wall, sunken trampoline and tractor; while younger tots will enjoy the safe toddler play area with sand table, play house, play kitchen, little slides and rocking horse.  There are also garden games to borrow including swing ball, badminton net, croquet and bowls.

Great for tiring out little ones, there are two marked farm trails to explore at Smallicombe.  They’re perfectly suited to little legs, though wellies or sturdy shoes are recommended!  And the bubbling brook which runs through the site is perfect for pooh sticks or pond dipping.  Smallicombe’s unique fairy trail, with magical gifts for successful completion, are also an exciting little extra perfect for young ones.
