The South West Coastal Path is just half a mile from the cottages, offering awe-inspiring walks along the rugged coastline, and the 180-mile Tarka Trail is ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle. Family friendly attractions in the local area include Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park; Watermouth Harbour, Castle and Theme Park; Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway; and the Big Sheep.

Our review of Coulscott House Holiday Cottages

ACCOMMODATION AND PRICES

There are seven properties to choose from at Coulscott, in a range of sizes to suit all requirements.  There are four smaller cottages, sleeping 2, 4 or 6 people (plus cots); two larger properties, Georgian House and Old Barn, sleeping nine or ten (plus cots); or for larger gatherings, there’s impressive Coulscott House itself, which combines two of the other properties to sleep up to 15 (and 4 cots) in eight bedrooms.

All the holiday cottages have been sympathetically restored from Coulscott Farm’s original stone and slate buildings, with many original features retained and restored, and now offer luxurious, well-appointed accommodation.  Several of the cottages have their own private hot tub to enjoy, and they all benefit from well-equipped kitchens, private gardens (many with beautiful countryside views) or shared communal courtyards ideal for outside dining, and comfortable open plan living areas. The larger properties, in particular, offer very impressive family friendly accommodation; take the Old Barn’s triple height vaulted ceilings inside, and huge private outdoor deck offering interrupted views down the valley.

For an idea of prices, a summer holiday stay during peak times costs from £1950/week in one of Coulscott’s four person cottages (Alyesbury or Peacock).  The Old Farmhouse (sleeping six + 2 cots, and with private hot tub) would cost £2750/week at the same time of year, while a larger group of up to 15 + infants hiring Coulscott House can expect to pay around £6950.  Prices are, of course, much lower during off peak periods (for example £850/week for four people for a week in January) and short breaks are also available for those seeking a long weekend.

CHILD FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

Coulscott is home to some fabulous child friendly facilities. Top of our list is the magnificent indoor heated swimming pool: a perfect place for children of all ages to splash, swim and let off steam whatever the weather’s doing outside.

Coulscott has a communal indoor games room with table football and table tennis. Younger tots under five will also enjoy the dedicated soft play area. Coulscott House and the Georgian House benefit from their own additional private games room with table tennis and darts.

Outside, there’s no shortage of safe outside space for your little ones to run around and explore. Coulscott is set in its own valley, with 16 acres of private grounds to wander including gardens, sunken lanes, ponds, meadows, orchards and streams – perfect for budding dam buildings. And of course, there’s a fantastic outdoor play area with large wooden pirate ship, two storey wendy house, a badminton court, five a side football pitch, trampoline, swings, slides, climbing frame, croquet and clock golf.

Always a favourite at Parent Friendly Stays, Coulscott is home to a wide range of visitor-friendly animals – alpacas, pygmy goats, a pig, guinea pigs and baby lambs – all of whom guests are encouraged to visit and help out at feeding time.  The on-site chickens also supply Coulscott’s eggs.

PARENT FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

The private hot tubs available at four of Coulscott’s properties (Old Barn, Old Farmhouse, Georgian House and Aylesbury Cottage) are the perfect place for mum and dad to relax at the end of a busy day.

For evenings when you’re cooking at home, Coulscott has a kitchen garden and greenhouse from which you’re free to pick yourself something to go with dinner. And if you don’t fancy going to that much effort, Coulscott’s on-site shop is well stocked with Cook ready meals and a selection of other items.

If you’re hoping to bring the family pet with you, you’ll be pleased to know the properties at Coulscott are dog friendly; and there’s also a superb five-acre dog walking field for off-lead fun and ball throwing. One of the favourite local walks will take you to the local village pub – the Hunters Inn at Heddons Valley – which is both dog and child friendly, and offers lovely food and drink in an idyllic setting.

For those looking to save space in the car, all the child and toddler equipment you might need during your stay is provided free of charge at Coulscott (cots, high chairs, booster seats, bed guards, baby baths, stair gates and so on).  WiFi is also available in all the cottages, and EV charging is available.

IN SUMMARY…

If we could imagine a Parent Friendly Stay from scratch, there’s a good chance it would look like Coulscott House Holiday Cottages!  Luxury child friendly holiday cottage accommodation, a wealth of family facilities on site and the beautiful Devon coastline and countryside on your doorstep.  What more could you wish for?
