Our review of the Ickworth Hotel

ACCOMMODATION AND PRICES

The Ickworth is an impressive luxury family hotel and apartments in the grand setting of historic Ickworth House, a spectacular 200 year old National Trust-run estate in the Suffolk countryside. Accommodation comes in the form of 27 hotel bedrooms with a range of child friendly options including family doubles (with extra room for 1-3 children sleeping in cots or on sofa beds), family suites (with two bedrooms) and interconnecting rooms (sleeping two adults and up to six children). There’s also a private retreat with three bedrooms and, around half a mile from the main hotel, a further lodge with various sizes of apartment. Rooms are traditionally styled and look comfortable and welcoming. Prices are as you might expect for a venue of the Ickworth’s style and quality, with an out of season stay for a family of four on a ‘dinner, bed and breakfast’ rate costing £249/night for a family double, rising to £379/night for a two bedroom apartment or £479/night for a full family suite. These prices rise to £315/night, £445/night and £445/night respectively during the summer peak.

CHILD FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

The Ickworth is designed with families in mind and as such there’s no shortage of entertainment for children of all ages. There’s an indoor heated swimming pool with a range of floats and pool toys, and outside there’s a large adventure playground, trampoline, garden games and tennis courts (with all the necessary equipment available from reception). To further let off steam you’ll be able to let the children run wild in the Ickworth estate’s incredible 1800 acres of grounds with lakes, a farm and deer-studded parkland to explore. Bikes are available for hire and there are a number of planned walking trails around the grounds ranging from short woodland strolls to longer energetic hikes of several miles. Children will also have a great time taking part in the Ickworth’s varied kids’ clubs and planned children’s activities – see below for more details. The Ickworth’s restaurant serves a wide range of child-friendly meals and snacks to make family dining as easy as possible.

PARENT FRIENDLY HOLIDAY FEATURES

The owners of the Ickworth Hotel clearly recognise that parents need (and deserve!) some relaxation time of their own, and as such the hotel offers extensive childcare and kids’ activities to give grown-ups some quality time. For younger children there’s a crèche catering for babies and children up to eight years old at which visitors are entitled to two hours free childcare per day, and on Sunday mornings there’s a 90 minute breakfast club so you can enjoy a lazy weekend lie-in. Older children will enjoy entertaining themselves in the hotel’s games room with air hockey, table tennis, table football and computer games, and there’s a nightly film showing at 6pm in the on-site cinema room. In the evenings babysitting is available and many of the hotel’s rooms are wired up to a baby listening service. All this means that parents can easily take advantage of the Ickworth’s on-site facilities such as enjoying a romantic meal at the sophisticated adults-only restaurant, unwinding at the on-site luxury spa or enjoying an exclusive after-hours stroll in the nearby Italianate gardens. To help you travel light, baby and toddler equipment (from cots and bottle warmers to bed guards and potties) can all be supplied by prior arrangement; pushchairs and baby carriers can even be borrowed if needed. Family pets are welcome for a small charge and there’s free WiFi throughout.

IN SUMMARY…

In our view at Parent Friendly Stays the Ickworth Hotel seems to offer the perfect blend of child friendly accommodation in an impressive setting with lots to keep the children happy and a little something for hard-worked mums and dads too. There’s no getting away from the fact that a stay at the Ickworth won’t come cheap – you’ll easily be paying over a thousand pounds for more than a couple of nights in one of the bigger family suites. But with so much on offer – and with daily childcare included – we think a stay at the Ickworth is well worth the investment.

WHAT THE OWNERS SAY

“Despite the grandeur of Ickworth, we welcome the sound of little feet – and paws too – and expect you treat our hotel like your own country home.

We encourage children to be curious, active and adventurous: find the giraffe in the walled garden, spot deer on the estate, explore the fairy garden, visit the farm animals and cycle along woodland trails.

Our excellent facilities inspire quality family time both indoors and out.”
